OCTOBER 1, 2012 – ESTERO — One morning, Timothy Bourke found himself sitting in pitch-black darkness on his deck in Lake Orion, Mich., sipping coffee with a piece of rope in one of his hands.

Questions rushed to his mind, as they often do: “Why do we have to tie knots? What is that?” he asked himself.

Those questions led him to his latest invention. Bourke, who relocated to Estero in January 2011, created the Super Rope Cinch, a device that locks rope in its place, without the need to tie a knot.

The patented invention is now sold online and in thousands of hardware and marine stores nationwide and overseas. Retail giant Walmart will soon roll it out, testing it at a store near its headquarters in Arkansas, Bourke said.

Bourke, 51, president and lead inventor for Just Right Products LLC, has six patents and he’s working on his seventh and eighth. For him, thinking up ideas is the easy part.

“I love it,” he said. “I can’t stop. It’s impossible for me.”

His latest rope invention gives Boy Scouts everywhere a run for their money. But while it might make some Boy Scout troop leaders grimace, Bourke has found a way to use it to their benefit, promoting it as a fund-raising tool. Some Sea Scout and Boy Scout troops locally are selling it to raise money.

After Bourke dreamt up his rope locking device in 2007, it was an uphill battle to bring it to market. He dropped plans for his other inventions to push this one.

In January of last year, he lost his house in Michigan and a warehouse where he’d started manufacturing another product he patented. He was locked out of the warehouse by the sheriff’s office because he no longer could pay the rent.

“We put everything we had and then some into the Super Rope Cinch trying to make it work. We had no idea that it would take so much funding. We have over $900,000 into it at this time,” he said.

By the end of the year, Bourke hopes to have sold enough of the gadgets to make the investment back.

“Being an inventor, it’s a very tough game,” he said.

The rope locking device is now sold on HomeDepot.com and at more than 70 Do-it-Best Hardware stores in the U.S. Lowe’s will start carrying it in stores nationwide early next year, and Home Depot will soon add it on shelves, Bourke said.

Negotiations are ongoing with other large, national retailers and distributors to sell the product, he said.

“You go into Walmart and you go elsewhere. It’s automatic. It’s a domino effect,” Bourke said.

The product is distributed by Orgill Inc. to mom-and-pop hardware stores in the U.S., while buyers in Brazil, Peru, Australia and Asia are showing interest.

The device — made from the same plastic that’s used for cell phone cases — looks like a laundry detergent cap. It’s red, round and has ridges. There’s a hole to fit one side of the rope into. With a few turns, the hole can be adjusted to tightly cinch the rope. A release button frees the rope in seconds.

Twisting the device to demonstrate how it works, Bourke said he purposely designed it to click loudly: “The clicking sound is everything,” he said with satisfaction as it caught the ear of everyone around him.

In tests, a rope secured by his product lifted more than 750 pounds, Bourke said, adding, “I grabbed a quarter-inch clothesline and I lifted 187 pounds with it.”

His invention can be used for securing boats, tents, luggage, backpacks, snowboards, wakeboards, tools and more. On average, each costs $4 to $5.

While he doesn’t mind tying knots himself, he admits he doesn’t like untying them.

For him, untying the rope often means cutting it with a knife because he can’t loosen the knot and throwing the rope away because he can’t reuse what’s left of it, he said.

“This is the new bungee cord. No more bungee cords,” Bourke said.

Bourke has been a full-time inventor since 2004. Before that, he was a union carpenter in the Detroit area and owned a roofing company there for about a decade. It was his wife, Dorothy Bourke, who encouraged him to shut down the roofing company to focus on his inventions. Among his other creations is a hands-free water station designed for camping.

The high-energy inventor doesn’t sleep much. For four years, he said, he’s been putting in a “nine-day work week,” usually going to sleep after midnight and rising at 3:30 a.m.

“They say the average person sleeps a third of their life away. I don’t do that,” he said, adding he catches a few cat naps here and there.

Bourke is proud to say his newest invention is made in this country.

“Everybody told me I was out of my mind. They said go to China and make as much money as you can,” he said.

The product is manufactured and packaged in Texas. The mold for it can spit out 300,000 pieces every 30 days, Bourke said.

After Bourke moved to Southwest Florida last year to be closer to his dad, he joined the Edison Inventors Association in Fort Myers, a not-for-profit whose mission is to advance the inventive and entrepreneurial spirit of Thomas Alva Edison. He’s shared stories of his struggles with the group’s members and they’re impressed by the success of his rope device.Jeffrey Smith, a board member of the inventors association, describes Bourke as a “force unleashed.”

“He loves the whole idea of inventing things and making them happen,” he said.

Smith also gives credit to Bourke’s brother, Andrew Bourke, who has been the “marketing genius” behind the product, he said.

In 2011, Andrew Bourke launched a campaign that has included social media and a flurry of press releases, which helped get the attention of two of the largest hardware distributors in the U.S.

“I don’t wonder, ‘Well is my brother working today?’” Timothy Bourke said.

Joe Gross, president of the Edison Inventors Association, said he uses about 10 of the rope locking devices to hold the fenders, or protective bumpers, on his 48 foot yacht.

“What’s so nice about it, is it’s so simple,” he said. “It only has two parts.”

He said anyone from a child to a 100-year-old man can find a use for the gadget.

“It just has super broad appeal, which is the holy grail for what you want for an invention,” Gross said. “It’s something that’s cheap to buy, cheap to make and easy to put together — or simple to operate.”
